Winter Car Emergency Safety Kit: What To Keep In Your Car

As winter approaches, it’s important to have a car emergency kit in your trunk just in case your find yourself in an unfortunate situation. Winter driving on icy and slippery roads is dangerous. While you always practice defensive safe winter driving, you should always be prepared for the unexpected. You may end up stuck for a long time so it’s important to have an emergency kit with you.

Remember a standard emergency kit, which should be kept in your car all year is different from a winter emergency kit. A standard emergency kit should include a booster cable, flashlight, traffic cones, and any other items to help you in case your car breaks down. A winter emergency kit is to help in situations caused by the weather.

Here are 6 items we think are important to keep in your winter emergency kit:

  • Water. Bottles of water (that won’t break if they freeze) will keep you hydrated in case you get stuck.
  • Non-perishable food. Items that open easily, won’t spoil, and can be eaten cold are great options if you find yourself stuck on the side of the road.
  • Warm clothing and a blanket. A pair of gloves, a hat, and socks will help you conserve heat. Keeping a blanket in the car will also keep your body temperature up and help preserve gas.
  • Shovel. A small shovel can help dig your car out of a little snow. When shoveling be careful not to tire yourself out. This could be very dangerous in the cold.
  • Sand or salt. Sometimes some salt or sand can help get you out of a slippery situation.
  • Windshield washer fluid. Snow and slush can cause build up on your windshield. Having some extra on hand is always a good idea.

Always check your emergency kit at the beginning of the winter season. Replace any expired food or old water bottles and make sure all your items are in good shape.
